Abstract
The huge variety of wood species and wood-based composites allows a wide scope of creative and aesthetic alternatives to materials with higher environmental impacts during production, use and disposal. Wood is material of biological origin, what results in variability of the wood properties. The prime goal of respective program is to elucidate properties of wood, wood based composites and derived materials. Good understanding of wood will enable development of new materials for application in various applications, including extreme environments. In order to achieve this goal, work will be organised in six work groups, namely; Wood biology (1), Performance of wood (2), New wood based materials (3), Biorefineries (4), Development and validation (5) and Organisation and transfer of knowledge (6). Within the program, there are 19 goals defined. These goals addresses, wood formation and correlation between growth and climate characteristics with overall wood properties with special emphasis on durability, outdoor performance and mechanical properties (dynamic and static).  Another set of goals is associated with development of new materials (modified wood, wood composites, wood based hybrids, nanocomposites …) and processes for treatment (plasma treatment …). Working group biorefineries will focus in extraction, characterisation and application of wood extractives and nanocellulose. Last set of goals is dedicated to the principles of circular economy, marketing and validation of the technologies. Coordination and dissemination are integrative part of the project. Program team is equipped with state of the equipment that will enable achievement of the proposed goals. In addition, program has established connections with international community that will enable them cooperation on the EU end worldwide level. In addition it should be considered, that program runs within University of Ljubljana, hence project team have tight contacts with cross-linking programs at our University related to forestry, renewable resources, chemistry and chemical technology.
Significance for science
Wood is one of the key materials in Slovenia. Good understanding of the wood enable its applications for products with the highest added value. Wood is exposed to degradation if used in outdoor conditions. In nature, these processes are desirable, but when wood is used for commercial purposes, we want to slow down these processes as much as possible. Since the use of biocidal products is not accepted by general public, we focus on the use of domestic wood species. In the past, durability of wood was mainly assigned to the presence of biologically active extractives. Recent research suggests that service life of wood is strongly influenced by water exclusion efficacy, as well. Water-repellent systems, such as waxes, are often used to improve water performance. It turned out that with a combination of waxes and thermal modifications excellent hydrophobic properties are achieved, which have significant influence on the service life of wood. Through the monitoring of outdoor wood, we confirmed that the water-performance of wood in the outdoor conditions is changing. Among the tested systems, the longest and most stable water performance was achieved with wax-treated wood. A novel low temperature approach was developed for the deposition of rutile TiO2 particles on a wood surface. The focus of this research was on investigations of interactions of TiO2 with surfaces of wood, in order to understand and develop new efficient way of protection of wood against ageing and at the same time preserving natural appearance of wood. FT-IR and Raman spectra measurements proved the establishment of TiO2-wood coordinative bonds of Ti ions with hemicellulose and lignin. Our investigations proved that a low temperature hydrothermal process is a suitable way to deposit rutile nanoparticles also on surfaces of wood and not only on surfaces of other substrates, what has been shown in scientific literature so far, making this finding a substantial new contribution in the field of wood functionalisation. This is also a novel method of hydrophobisation and improvement of dimensional stability of wood. Different groups of polyphenolic extracts exhibit a wide spectrum of biochemical properties, including beneficial effects on human health. Extremely high potential in this area has stylbens pinosylvin and pinosylvin monomethyl ether, which are found only in pine wood. The potential for the production of stilbenes is mainly wood residues, which appear as a mixture of different wood species in industrial conditions, which greatly complicates the isolation of individual compounds. In respective programme, an original method for the isolation of pinosylvin and pinosylvin monomethyl high purity from wood residues was developed. Compared to the methods known to date, the advantage of the developed method is that it is based on the use of environmentally friendly, non-chlorinated solvents. The method is suitable for the isolation of other compounds, and for transition to a higher technological level and transfer to the real environment. New discoveries and findings in the field of adhesives for wood from natural sources (liquefied wood, tannin and soy), manufactured and characterized tannin-based insulating foams and lightweight composites. Developed new materials for 3D printing from wood dust and thermoplastic polymers. Designed adhesive joints between wood and steel with epoxy and polyurethane adhesives. Manufactured hybrid glued laminated beams (GLULAM), modified laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), and examined their physical and mechanical properties. The results of the inter-annual monitoring of wood and phloem formation provide a better understanding of the phenological response of trees in the context of climate change. The results and the collected data can be used for forest management and upgraded for new research purposes. Research on representative tree species (spruce and beech) and representative sites (at differ
Significance for the country
In times of diminishing fossil resources it is of utmost importance and societal relevance to develop ways for an optimised use of renewable biomass in terms of potential alternatives to fossil-based resources.   Putting research achievements of this project into further research and development, and their transfer into manufacture processes of the industrial partners, will directly contribute to achievement of the European Union environmental goals. Successful completion of the project will contribute to increase in the use of wood as renewable and locally available resource, which will additionally contribute to lower energy consumption and GHG emissions due to lower demand for raw material transport.   Wood is an important source for infrastructure, too (poles, railway ties, bridges, noise barriers,...). This infrastructure requires reliable protection. The collected data will enable us to predict maintenance intervals and replacement times more accurately.   The green method for the isolation of valuable extracts from wood biomass enables the implementation of the method in pilot and industrial conditions. The method thus makes a decisive contribution to the design of the biorefinery of wood extractive and thus the production of high-value products. The latter has a multi-layered effect, since it allows the exploitation of less valuable wood residues for valuable products, opens up new jobs in bio-economy, and the final product can be used in dietary supplements that can alleviate the problems of an aging population in EU. The pinosylvin isolation method is a fragment that complements the value chain in the field of dietary supplements.   A considerable percentage of the Slovenian national heritage is made of wood (wooden construction, sculptures, tools...). This heritage is constantly threatened by wood decay fungi. The knowledge gained will help us to keep this heritage for the future.   Dendrochronological research has enabled the absolute dating of pile dwellings in the UNESCO list, which enables their better protection. The transfer of the knowledge obtained by dendrochronological investigations of wood from cultural heritage contexts enables heritage protection services, museums, local communities.   Development of the moisture based indicators will enable prediction of service life and maintenance intervals for selected advance wood based composites, which will enable use of these materials for purposes for which they have not previously been used, due to the lack of knowledge. Developed methodology will be applied on the other materials as well.   Predictive service life data will be useful for other companies involved in wooden construction. This will increase the consumption of domestic wood, which does not require much energy for machining, and will decrease dependency on imported material and energy.   The new method of low temperature hydrothermal deposition of TiO2 on wood, together with some other outcomes on applications of natural oils – either without or with nanoparticles of titania – represent a novel way of protection of wood against weathering. This is important with regards to sustainable building with wood that is increasing in Slovenia.   They contribute to consumer’s positive attitude towards building with wood. Consequently, positive impacts in the field of environmental protection and tackling of climate change can be expected.   Newly developed adhesives and bonding technologies enable the production of environmentally friendly-wood composites and glued wood, contribute to the recycling of wood residues (liquefied wood) and contribute to sustainable development and cleaner production and usage. Developed tannin-based insulating foams and lightweight composites on their basis represent an excellent insulation material for wood construction, reduce thermal energy consumption, open new development opportunities and new jobs. Structural glued joints made of wood and steel allow for more rig
