The competitive information world of today is forcing the library community to rethink and improve the way it provides information to the users. The clear advantages of the library catalogue, such as authority control, consistency and the wealth of information are obviously not utilised to their full potential. A step further from the card catalogue paradigm is therefore urgently needed. The library has to take better advantage of its rich and high quality data as well as centuries of experience and provide the information to their users in an effective and user-friendly way. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) provides a new view which could not only enable more intuitive presentation of bibliographic information, but also open this information using Semantic Web tools and services and therefore promote exchange and reuse across domains. Some current research activities will be presented. They all pave the way to better bibliographic information systems, which should be developed without further delay.
