An increase in the intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) in astrocytes elicits a discharge of gliotransmitters from vesicles, probably by affecting vesicle trafficking. We showed that a rise in [Ca2+]i enhanced the speed of recycling VGLUT1 (vesicular glutamate transporter 1) vesicles and reduced the speed of ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide) vesicles. Cytoskeleton-severing agents abolished vesicle mobility, indicating a cytoskeleton dependent vesicle recycling. Our findings importantly contribute to the understanding of how vesicle mobility is regulated.
