The research work about social geographical processes represents new realizations that are going on in Slovenia on the break of the millennium. It encompasses the transformation of population and towns, their physical and socio-economic outcomes in regional development, industrialization, post-industrialization, urbanization and even metropolization. Jointly with the outcomes of previous investigations, we try to combine newer theoretical and practical approaches. The reach and magnitude of the problems are demanding new and complex approaches to sustainable paradigm in the landscape. The program had the following strategical aims: a) Study of spatial structures and processes, the scheme of the settlement and social economic activities of the population. b) The role of social geography in regional development: the study of regional structures and the dynamics of change in regional development and the changes in economic structure and its spatial influences. c) The role of political geography at complex analysis of national minorities in Slovenia, as weal as ethnic structure. d) Study of pollution of different landscape types and elements, with the identification of the polluters, the vulnerability of the environment and the relationship between groups and its environment. e) Studies of newer mobility patterns, migrations, cross border relations and spatial, social results in origin and destination areas. The response of the professional public at the presentations of the research work on international platforms we can safely say that the biggest attention was for our methodologies (typology of settlements, regional development, the assessments of environmental exposure), especially those segments that try to evaluate the environmental limits. The knowledge of our environment is one of the principal demands of sustainable development that is mentioned in Agenda 21. The specialty of our methodology is in the fact that it offers the possibility of assessing smaller homogeneous land types. As a direct result we have several agreements with some other geographical institutions for the exchange of knowledge and the implementation of our methodologies on test areas (Slovak and Czech geographers). We have also strengthened our cooperation with Academy for spatial planning from Hanover (ARL) and some other universities (Bayreuth, Goetingen, TU Wien, etc.).
