The studies conducted within the research programme were mostly carried out in cooperation with institutes abroad and individual researchers. Along with research on topics from the nearby regions of Central Europe and the Adriatic, the thematic scope and problems of the history of art in Slovenia have therefore moved beyond the national context. The broad scientific value of the achievements of the research programme lies in the development of a methodology based on the specific historical, geographic and cultural conditions of this historical area, which is defined by the contacts between and blending of Mediterranean and continental influences. Special emphasis must be placed on art heritage from the Gothic period in the Koper region as an example of a distinct border area between different cultures; research on Gothic and Baroque architecture, specifically Francesco Robba and Venetian sculpture in Slovenia as an example of a geographical and cultural artistic expansion; and research on medieval painting in Slovenia and in the countries of the eastern Alps (including publications abroad). A broad contribution to scientific development was also made by specific publications on 15th century art in Dalmatia and Italy. Research on the reception of early graphic prints (in Slovene and European art until 1500) is of special methodological value, where we are a step ahead of similar research elsewhere.
