We can summarize the results of our interdisciplinary research programme in three major areas: Firstly, we contributed to the theory of small states and their position in the structure of international community. The definition of small states has been operationalized by the application of partial theoretical approaches and their syntheses. As the most appropriate model to be identified was the constructivist model which is reducing the importance of quantitative attributes of the state, emphasizing the perception of smallness of the most important actors, as well as the relational-sectorial model, based on the role of individual state in specific fields of activities (state can be on the specific field either large or small, regardless of its other quantitative attributes). Secondly, by generalizing world trends and the experiences of Slovenia's integration in such trends in political and economic fields, and general theoretical conclusions about the role of internationalization in the development of small, outward oriented economies. Based on empirical evaluation of a number of economies in transition we have identified transition-specific factors of internationalization and thus enriched theories of sequential internationalization of firms. Such economies, like Slovenia, are facing challenges of transformation into a market economy, parallel to the integration into the EU, and having common systemic-specific historic characteristics. Therefore, the exsisting theoretical approaches have proven insufficient to embrace all the above mentioned factors. Therefore the Slovenian experiences, and those of some other transition economies, are innovative contribution to the existing knowlege. Thirdly, interdisciplinary analysis of the position of small states in the processes of globalization, taking into account political, social, and institutuional dimensions, represents a contribution from the point of view of the synthesis of different theories in a step ahead towards direction of (possibly) general theory of small states. Special attention was given to the developments and the role in specific sectors/areas like services, innovations, foreign direct investments, and in all three areas introduced into theory transition and size-specific elements which may modify the exsiting theories. By the introduction of multidisciplinary aspect to in so-far prevailing monodisciplinary approaches in most of the prevailing exsisting theories we introduced the contemporary trends in different scientific disciplines, realizing more and more the limitations of monodisciplinary approaches to resolve the complex and intertwined problems of the contemporary world and the position of small states in it. These contributions are reflected in a number of published articles of the researchers of this programme in scientific journals and books, published by prominent publishers including SCI journals and number of SCI citations; in participation at numerous international conferences as guest speakers, and not last by the participation in a number of international projects including the pan-European research networks and centres of excellence.
