Research programme has provided comprehensive analytical understanding of social dimensions of security, which in contemporary world need to be addressed as a multidimensional category, determined by political, economic, social, technological, environmental, military and other factors. Interlink between different levels, as national, regional and global level, is also increasingly important. Simultaneously, the programme provides comprehensive understanding of problems connected with functioning of social mechanisms, which provide security. Scientific contribution of programme lies primarily in dealing with security problems using multidisciplinary and multimethod approaches, in providing empirical data in this field and in evaluation and improving existing theories. Programme results comprise of several complex areas of issue inside the field of security: - Understanding Slovenia's international security environment and her security position on the basis of analyses of geostrategical and political factors, processes of international cooperation and integration in the field of security and the role of international security institutions. Research work has been relied on different paradigms and conceptual scientific approaches. Empirical surveys conducted in the framework of the programme have provided for evaluation and improving contemporary security paradigms, enhancing the analytical value of research results. - Scientific analyses of functioning of Slovenian security system were conducted, considering its military as well as non-military components. These analyses provide for better understanding of the role of military organisation and also the process of its transformation in contemporary society. Contemporary societies are also the faced with problem how to respond in various crises which are mostly of non-military nature. Research in crisis management in Slovenia, using cognitive-institutional approach, has provided the evaluation and improvement of current theoretical approaches. - Civil-military relations are one of the important segments of research on security in modern states. Programme contributes to improved knowledge about principles of these relations and to building appropriate theoretical models of relations between civil society and the military. Empirical research on military, political institutions, public opinion and institutions of civil society in Slovenia, together with comparative studies on these issues in foreign countries, substantially contribute to theoretical understanding of contemporary issues in civil military relations.
