Physics: We developed a mathematical model for intracellular calcium signalling in airway smooth muscle cells. In particular, the model has been applied for studying the airway smooth muscle cells stimulation by caffeine. The main result of the study was that the ATP-ases in the sarcoplasmic reticulum do not play the primary role Ca2 plus remove from the cytosol in the early stage after the agonist application. The released calcium is first sequestered by mitochondria and bounded to the cytosolic proteins. In the field of studying the sensitivity, flexibility, and robustness of intra- and intercellular signalling pathways, we obtained two main results. First, we found that the sensitivity and robustness are the key system properties that determine the coupling ability of cellular oscillators. Second, we show that the frequency dependent stochastic resonance can be explained by measuring the flexibility and robustness of the corresponding system We explained static properties of cores of defects in nematic and smectic liquid crystal phases and coarsening dynamic of defects following a sudden isotropic-nematic phase transition. We emphasised universal features and established connections with similar phenomena in cosmology. Biology: Vegetational Science: - Positive correlation between naturally elevated CO2 from natural vents and some ecophysiological parameters, as stomatal density, biomass and some photosynthetic parameters. - Relations between species richness, productivity and calorimetric values in Karst pastures. - Relations between environmental variables and species richness in dry and semi-dry grasslands across Slovenia. - Role of allelopathy in secondary succession with tall umbelliferous plants. Zoology: - In agricultural ecosystems and in woodland, lacewings (Neuroptera) are recognized as beneficial predators of plant-sucking insect pests. - Number of generations is confirmed for the plant pest, horse-chestnut leafminer (Cameraria ohridella) occurring in Middle Europe. - An overview of the havestman and lacewing fauna of Slovenia and Croatia has been made (Arthropoda: Opiliones and Neuroptera). - Mechanisms of overwintering in Gyas spp. (Opiliones) have been discovered. - A new opilionid species, Nelima narcisi, has been described. - Morphology, ultrastructure and mode of action of leg chordotonal organs in the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) are investigated. Detailed are neurotransmitters of the femoral chordotonal organ, and the role of phasic and phasic-tonic sensory neurones in the subgenual organ is elucidated. - Biophysical properties of sand as a medium for transmission of vibratory signals important in the detection of prey of antlions are described.
