Fundamental lexicographic works and research results achieved in the preparation of these will be very important for all further research activities in the field of linguistics (the preparation of normative and specialist dictionaries of Slovene, e.g. the electronic version of the Slovene orthographic code; in compilation are the following: the dictionary of newer Slovene words, synonymic, phraseological, valency and lemmatization dictionaries, as well as a monographic presentation of collected dictionary materials). The collection of linguistic corpus material for lexicographic work and its analysis include the definitions of meanings and their explanation, the determination of standard pronunciation, together with the stress position and the toneme, the distinction between homonymy and polysemy, which all belong to scientific methodology. The research method of the programme group is entirely in conformity with current foreign methodology in synchronous linguistics, and of lexicology as one of its segments. The publication of above-listed lexicographic works will contribute immensely to equivalent treatment of Slovene in the international community. The results (dictionaries and monographs in printed and electronic versions, as well as on the Internet) are therefore of extreme importance as a contribution to the development of linguistics in Slovenia and abroad. The achieved results will be applied in pedagogical processes in Slavicist centres of European and other universities, as well as in scientific research at the same universities, and also in academies and other research institutions all over the world. Several specific features of Slovene, e.g. the preserved tonemes, morphological peculiarities (e.g. the existence of the dual and its usage), and archaic lexicon make it interesting for the study and development of linguistics in the context of Slavic studies and elsewhere. On the long run the results of the research programme are important in new applications of language resources in the context of language technologies (e.g. machine-aided translation), which are necessary at the time when Slovenia is being included into European integrations.
