In social sciences one cannot speak about achievements in terms of sudden discoveries as it may be the case in natural and especially in technical sciences. When we speak about "achievements" in the international context, we have in mind original reflections on a higher scientific level. Their impacts are usually observable only after a few years time and in a cumulative sense. In another perspective, such achievements can be found in some specific scientific (or at least scientifically verifiable) messages from the Slovene cultural context to the international space. In the field of basic social and human sciences our research is inscribed in the contemporary trends in the special domains (besides the central educational sciences also, for instance, in philosophy, sociology, etc.). Our research links together "post-modern" developments of the inter-disciplinary knowledge (i.e. cultural analysis, women studies, etc.). Along with the increased communication in the world research community an interest in achievements in the social and human sciences in the so called transition cultures before and after the crucial social changes has gradually augmented - especially in the West. Our programme therefore enables a continuation and development of exchanges of new discoveries, of contributions to the epistemological innovations in disciplinary fields as well as in the inter-disciplinary field of education. As the "transition" becomes history and as the mutual acquaintanceship between researchers and institutions grows, we are moving to the forms of collaboration on the basis of commonly defined problems or specific directions of research. One valuable indicator of such collaboration is in our case the fact that the international journal The School Field - which has been for some 12 years published together by the Slovenian Association of Researches in the School Field and the Educational Research Institute (ERI) with members of the programme group as the core editors - is published by the Sage in London from 2003 onwards. As the importance of knowledge (and along with it the importance of education) is growing very quickly all over the world, the quantity of the educational research on all levels is also growing. These developments are accompanied by ever more intense exchanges of achievements, experiences, information, etc. also on the level of applications. Such activities are mirrored by our Educational Research Institute's links within world networks of such communications. Of course, some of these relations are more formal and others less formal. We have in mind here such relations as the membership in the European Educational Research Association (EERA), in which ERI happens to be one of the collective constitutive members, or links through projects within the EU programmes. IEA studies that make an important part of the programme (at the same time, they are studies, important on their own) represent the Slovene inclusion in the comparative research of educational systems and their educational achievements in the global setup. A high degree of reliability of these studies has a multiplication effect in the rest of educational research and a great resonance in the global media. Through this kind of research Slovenia becomes globally visible. Our participation in organisations such as Unesco and Council of Europe should be also mentioned.
