The goal of the program was to show the heterogeneous and complexity of settlement structures in the existing settlement network. With that we are willfully trying to influence the settlement scheme in Slovenia and also to show possible prospects of further development. The results are suggesting some answers on the dilemma of spatial development of cities and settlement in general. The research program has answered the following: - Better knowledge of regional development and possible solutions in regional politics. - Better knowledge of urban development and better solutions regarding paradigms of urban development. - What are the modern structures in settlement, the characteristics and rate of urbanization, typologies. The research also deals with questions about economic (development of employment structures), transportation, residential, land- rent and other significant factors of developmental program and measures that influence the settlement network. We also studied the influence of planned infrastructural systems (transport, energy, water management) on further development of settlements and networks. - Special chapter is dedicated to relations between the city and it's periphery. What are the new constellations between new "activities" in different settlement structures in Slovenia. - What are the potential possibilities of settlements from the environmental point of view - What are the estimates- projections of the population in important city regions-The basic answers are looked from critical assessment of contemporary theories of settlemental structures in Slovenian landscape. Our basic data were gathered from functions, accessibility, influential areas, etc. of urban networks. - We dealt with questions of polycentric development, hierarchy of settlements, regional differences of socio economic structures of settlements. The centers of urban network, size and centrality,.... and different criteria for the creation of hierarchical network of settlements and functions. We dealt with different variants and consequences of changing the settlement scheme and other dilemmas and trends of further development of population and organization of settlements. At political-geographical research of pluses and minuses of borderland areas we analyzed social characteristics of the population (demographics, education, economic structure, number and size of manufacturers and service activities, tourist infrastructure) and the quality of living of different households. The ecological and geographical segment of the research program was mainly aimed at finding and identifying human pressures and their effects in different landscape types that have specific tolerance level due to its character. Amongst the most important are expert elements of sustainable planning and development of the environment that ensures that all further human actions do not lead to further degradation of our environment.
