The national importance of the results of our basic science research published in the international scientific journals is to involve Slovenia into a high quality scientific endeavour in the field of biomedicine, enable international cooperation of our scientists and improve the recognition of Slovenia as a reliable scientific partner in the developed world. In Slovenia, our research work increases the quality of our knowledge and helps implementing foreign know-how and techology. It contributes to the education of young scientists and medical doctors and, therefore, augments the teaching and scientific potential in medicine and enhances the abilities of future physicians in clinical practice. The knowledge gained by our investigations is directly used in graduate and postgraduate study courses for health professionals. Some applied research was performed in collaboration with Slovene industry. The investigations of the pharmacological properties of the substance LEK-8829 resulted in a patent application. We took part in the investigations of the monoclonal antibodies specific for the patological form of the prion protein, which have been patented too, and promise to bring new diagnostic test for prion diseases. In collaboration with others, we also investigated non-immunogenic labeling substances for prion aggregates which are very promising from the viewpoint of in vivo diagnosis of prion diseases using PET imaging of the brain. We developed a new method for measuring the power spectrum of oscillations of the body center of gravity by a force-plate during quiet standing. It may be used for clinical work because it enables simple and repeatable measurments in ambulatory patients with disturbances of equilibrium.
