Our research programme encompasses basic research as well as applied studies and for both directions up-to date approaches are used, from molecular genetics to fermentation technology, production and characterisation of recombinant proteins. In this way, our programme represents an important contribution to education and qualification of young researchers from various areas, such as biology, microbiology, pharmacy, chemistry, chemical engineering, and biotechnology, including under-graduate and post-graduate levels. "New biotechnology" which is the basis of this programme, represents one of the most quickly developing fields and will as one of the leading technologies significantly mark the 21st century, consequently the transfer of knowledge to young researchers and industry is extremely important. Biopharmaceuticals based on recombinant proteins enable different approaches to medical treatment not possible with classical drugs and offer new possibilities, therefore, nowadays the recombinant proteins hold the highest share among the new pharmaceuticals. Our research programme topics are up-to date and technical solutions found for our model proteins are widely applicable to numerous others including the market most interesting protein molecules. For many years our research group has been involved in successful collaboration with Slovenian pharmaceutical company Lek and we can say that our research has substantially contributed to the fact that Slovenian pharmaceutical industry is nowadays successfully entering the area of recombinant biopharmaceuticals.
