The research into the history of philosophy has made an essential contribution to the development of consistent philosophical thought in Slovenia. The research has been carried out on an interdisciplinary basis and in fields that have so far been neglected. Focusing on what was found particularly deficient, the research has made considerable improvements in the fields of political philosophy and the history of philosophy, especially of medieval philosophy. The research has elaborated and applied methods and concepts of key importance for political philosophy and political theory, conducted detailed analyses of the articulation of the concepts and languages of political philosophy and jurisprudence in different historical contexts, and remedied many a deficit in our knowledge of the history of philosophy. Our research has great potential for informing strategic political decisions. This is especially true of the research into the history of the idea of Europe and of European integration, and into contemporary practices of multiculturalism and interculturalism, conceived of as being of central importance for addressing the questions of political thought and action in our contemporary world in philosophy, historiography, and cultural studies. The relevance of issues dealt with in our research for policy making has grown with the current integration of Europe. Our research has the potential as well to inform current debates on civic education and to successfully approach the problems of ethnic minorities in Slovenia. As such, our research is involved in, and can make an important contribution to, the debate on these issues taking place elsewhere in the world. Our research has both initiated new professional debates in our own country and raised the quality of those already taking place, and taken part in international research efforts and debates in the fields of political philosophy, political theory, and the history of philosophy. The results of our research in the field of political philosophy and the history of philosophy have great potential value and applicability in graduate and post-graduate studies. Due to unresolved systemic problems in Slovenia regarding realtions between the research sphere and the sphere of higher education, we need unfortunately to point out that this potential has not been realized to the degree we had wished. Our research feeds into the publication of fundamental works in the history of philosophy in critical editions with Slovenian translations. Since, as a rule, these publishing efforts result in bringing to the public works that have not hitherto been available in Slovenian, these efforts make an essential contribution to the creation of a solid basis for studies and further research in the field. Part of the same efforts for developing the infrastructure for the study and development of philosophy in Slovenia has been research into Slovenian philosophical terminology. The aim of this lexicographical work is the publication of a Slovenian philosophical dictionary. It follows from what we have said that the results of our research have potential practical value for our country in the following three main spheres: science, education, and policy.
