Slovene fundamental industrial brances are electro and machine tool industry that in large produce and use the components of the electro-mechanical systems. Their competitivness greatly depends on the new knowledge from the areas where the Institute for robotics performs its research work. Institute for robotics at FERI has a traditionally good connection with the Slovene industry. Especially intensive and focused are our projects that run in the frame of technological stimulations of MŠZŠ. In the future our ability to gain money from the European structural founds will depend on the qualifications and skills of our researchers. The results of the basic research of servodrives control have been transfered into application project with Gorenje, Velenje, in which we have built a laser cutting machine and the CNC controller. We have been developing a new machine for cutting of leather and artificial fabric by waterjet. That shall be an important application of computer control in the shoe industry. Both machines are directly linked with the research activities of our group and we have extendedly reported about the results in relevant scientific journals. With the acquired knowledge we became qualified to consult Slovene enterprises on rapid prototyping of new products. This field is extremely interesting for the car industry and many Slovene enterprises supply their products to international car companies. A study of the technological transfer from the 14 V to 42 V voltage supply in cars has been done for Kolektor Idrija. A very sucessful experiments of the control of the 135KW, 3x500 V hydraulic pump in a workroom and in mineshaft for Rudnik Velenje have been executed. System of power converter for the supply of AC motor servodrives based on digital signal processor reduces current spikes in the network and also enables the continuous control of pressure in equipment in Rudnik. In the field of servoactuators a new tester for the automatised measurments of the magnet packets for stators of induction motors was developed for Rotomatika company from Spodnja Idrija. For Iskra tela d.d. height measurment equipment was automatised with the use of microcomputer. In the frame of the international cooperation we have sucessfully organised international conferences (IEEE ISIE'99, RAAD'2000, AMC'2002 and ICIT'03) where Slovene researchers had a great opportunity to meet and discuss current developments and future perspetivities with many specialists from all over the world. The postgraduate education of the young researches as well as the undergrate courses of the automation and mechatronic studies were modernized with new didactic methods based on the Internet. In the year 2000 Institute for robotics created the spadework by establishing a new interdisciplinary study on Mechatronics. The study course is performing by Faculty for mechanical engineering and FERI in the third and fourth year. The study is design in a modern way, so almost all information about lectures, pratices and project work are gained through Internet. In this way a new trend in modern didactics is followed that makes students to think more on their own. The program of the education through Internet was also extended to the udergradute courses of automation and robotics.
