The Structural Biology Group at JSI is the only group in Slovenia, equipped and qualified to solve 3-dimensional structures of macromolecules using X-ray diffraction method. Most of the research is done on own in-house facilities and our own research topics in collaboration with foreign research groups, which ensures the high-quality level of research in Slovenia and reasonable expenditure of funds. The group for structural biology is the cradle of the new generation of young investigators well qualified for the work in biotechnological enterprises. Qualified young Ph.D. are also potential founders of bio-high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) and potential EU patent lawyers. One of the main activities of the working group is the research work done within the framework of diploma, Masters and Ph.D. thesis. Three young researchers are being trained at the moment and two diploma student will finish their university education by the end of august this year. The program is opened for joint research mostly within own department as well as with other research groups. Two research papers were published in collaboration with the group of prof. Maček from the Biotechnical Faculty. As for the future, the group for structural biology wishes to expand the collaboration to other research groups within Slovenia and abroad. Crystallization of macromolecules and determination of their 3-dimensional structure alone and in is a complex technology, necessary for the development of active ingredients, pharmaceutical products, and pesticides. The research results (crystallization and 3-dimensional structures of macromolecules) can be subjected to patenting and trading. In addition, the functional Structure Biology Group is the base for the development of software for crystal structure determination.
