At the national level, our research results are fundamental for further development of different subdisciplines (Italian studies, French studies, Hispanic studies) on the one hand, and on the other they also have a direct bearing on language studies and on the humanities in general. Members of our research group have been actively collaborating with colleagues working in areas such as Slovene linguistics, Slavic linguistics, English linguistics, German linguistics, general linguistics, classical philology, Chinese linguistics, Japanese linguistics, etc. Given that in Slovenia a high level of knowledge of Romance languages is essential for successful intercultural communication at the economic, political, scientific and cultural levels - apart from being of central importance also for all those speakers of Slovene who, for a variety of reasons, are interested in the Romance literatures - the results of our research, which have been constantly applied to the teaching of Romance languages at university, will continue to have immediate relevance to the quality of the training of teachers of these languages at all levels, from primary school to university, and will also help Slovene speakers of Romance languages develop their mastery of these languages (by making available to them modern and more comprehensive grammar books, dictionaries, language textbooks and other language manuals). Special materials have been prepared for teachers of Italian in the Slovene Coastal region with a view to effectively enhancing the bilingualism of the area. Members of our research group have been playing key roles as chairs and members of A-level examination boards and of curricular committees for French and Spanish in secondary schools and for Italian in primary and secondary schools; they have also organized a number of training courses for primary- and secondary-school language teachers and for members of A-level examination boards. In addition to that, our research results have also been contributing to the quality of the teaching of translation and interpreting in Slovenia and, consequently, to the development of Slovene translation and interpretation services, which is of particular importance because of Slovenia's current efforts to successfully enter EU institutions. Some of our research results (a. descriptive and explanatory presentations of the functioning of the Slovene language, b. bilingual dictionaries) are also expected to have a considerable influence upon the teaching and learning of Slovene as a second/foreign language; they should be of use to foreigners interested in the Slovene language and culture as well as to foreign diplomats and to representatives of foreign economic and cultural bodies in Slovenia who would like to improve the quality of their cooperation with Slovene partners.
