Results of the research programme represent successful introduction of modern tools of molecular genetics and functional genomics to the national research programme. International connections which originate from research within this programme contribute considerably to the integration of the national research into the European research area (ERA). Research on autochtonous genetic material (Salmonid species, Lipizzan horses) allows rational management of genetic resources and is at the same time international promotion of our natural heritage. Development of molecular markers and their application open possibility for development of the new generation of management plans for protection of biodiversity and introduction of new selection procedures based on genome analysis and use of molecular markers. New knowledge in the field of antigenic variation of avian mycoplasmas offers possibility to develop new diagnostic reagents and more efficient vaccines for poultry protection. This is at the same time opportunity for biotech industry to take advantage of the knowledge already protected by patents filed by the research group.
