The results of this programme are important for the scientific development in the areas of machine learning, decision support systems, artificial intelligence in general, qualitative reasoning, abductive reasoning, and expert systems. The methods developed are particularly important for Slovenia with respect to applications. A number of decision support models were developed, particularly for medical diagnosis and prognosis (in cooperation with medical experts from the Ljubljana Clinical Centre, and the Institute of Oncology, Ljubljana). These medical applications include: traumatology, prognosis in hip surgery, prognosis in healing, prognosis in hip surgery, diagnosis of ishemic disease. Two systems for the acquisition and management of clinical data were implemented, as well as a system for data entry and decision support for palm-held computers which is in use in the Department of General Surgery in the Clinical Centre, Ljubljana. A number of other applications concern technological fields, such as textile industry (prediction of the properties of textile materials and aesthetic appearence of clothes), machine engineering (prediction of the properties of materials and products depending on the materials and processes). A preliminary application of machine learning in the forecasting of meteorological parameters showed that this approach can improved forecasts by the most sophisticated methods currently in use. This research program is relevant also with respect to high level education. New knowledge acquired through this programme is subject of regular courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Ljubljana University, seminars, and direct collaboration with application experts.
