Collections of dirges, the »mrtveče pesmi« that were sung in the eastern part of the Slovene ethnic territory at wakes and during funerals were published in the Slovene March and in other Hungarian towns from the end of the 18th century. Moreover, numerous manuscript songbooks with a similar repertoire have been preserved, especially from the 19th century. In the article, various printed editions and reprints are compared with manuscript collections. In addition, the question of the transition path is posed: whether manuscript songbooks copied printed editions or were songs that were previously circulated within the manuscript tradition later published in printed books.
