Increasing physical activity of children and adolescents and reduction of related health risk factors is one of the pressing problems of modern society. With the aim to raise physical activity and health of Slovenian children and adolescents, Slovenia and other developed countries measure their outcomes. Slovenia joined the World Active Initiative Kids Global Alliance in 2016 to monitor policy measures to increase the physical activity of children and adolescents. A group of Slovenian experts prepared a Report for Slovenia 2016 in international comparison Global Matrix 2.0. In this global analysis, 38 countries from 6 continents participated (representing 60% of the world's population). All countries assessed physical activity according to nine indicators following the uniform methodology: Overall physical activity; Organized sport participation; Active play; Active transport;Sedentary behaviours; Family and peers; School, Community and built environment and Government strategies and investments. The average estimates of all indicators were highest in Denmark, Slovenia and the Netherlands. Slovenia performed the best in the indicator of the school with the highest possible grade A and in the Overall physical activity with grade A-. The lowest rated indicator for Slovenia was Active play (grade D), while for Family and peers and the Community and the Built environment we did not report grade du to lack of the information.

In 2016 Slovenia prepared the first national report on physical activity of children within the Active Healthy Kids global alliance network. We made a systematic review of the best available evidence on correlates of physical activity including built environment. The analysis showed that Slovenia currently does not have sufficient quality data on the influence of the built environment on children's physical activity although the overall physical activity of children in Slovenia proved to be among the highest in the world. We are aiming to overcome the lack of quality data on correlations between environmental factors and physical activity with the analysis of the data, gathered within our research project.

The quality of life of children and the elderly in towns is directly conditioned by their physical activity. Healthy ageing does not result only from life style in the old age period, but starts already in the childhood. Children are exposed to the risk of physical inactivity, manifested in their lower physical fitness. The aim of the project is to evaluate urban residential areas from the aspect of possibilities for physical activity of children and the elderly and the relation between physical characteristics of the space and its use. Qualitative approach was used in the empirical part. The formal method of focus groups with children and elderly was adopted to include the mapping exercise by the participants. On the aerial and topographic maps they identified the points of risk at their daily paths, the structures in the space that represent mental barrier or those points that they perceive as pleasant. The results serve as an input for a list of criteria defining the quality of outdoor spaces in school districts.

Healthy life style can be attributed to individual’s decision as well as to the possibilities to realise such a decision in the physical and social environment. Children as well as the elderly belong to the most vulnerable groups, as their use of space for physical activity depends mostly on the environment in the vicinity of their homes. The aim of the project whose results are presented is to evaluate selected urban residential areas in Slovenia from the aspect of possibilities for physical activity of children and of the elderly and the relation between physical characteristics of the space and its use. A qualitative approach was used in the empirical part. A focus groups method with children and elderly was adopted, including mapping. On the aerial and topographic maps, they identified the points of risk in their daily paths and points perceived as pleasant. A list of criteria defining the quality of outdoor spaces can be used to support spatial plans.
