The publication systematically introduces research on community interpreting in Slovenia, where this field is still relatively new and unexplored. It includes interpreting in healthcare, law and other segments of public sector in which interpreting is performed between parties with an unbalanced distribution of power. The central role is played by a demonstration of interpreting interaction, in which an analysis of the use of linguistic means reveals the very balance of power between different parties in various environments. Special emphasis is put on interpreting official interviews, as a special case of communicative act, which includes features of diadic and triadic mutual exchange and takes place within an institutionalized environment.

The author-audience interaction is an important issue in academic writing, but when academic texts are translated, new issues regarding the author-audience relationship arise because of the translator's involvement in the text. This paper examines translators' interventions in academic writing by focusing on one dimension of the author-audience interaction, i.e., reader-oriented strategies or engagement markers. Corpus analysis is employed to explore the use of engagement markers in academic texts translated into English, their corresponding source texts originally written in Slovene, and in comparable original English texts. The analysis reveals that while the frequency of engagement markers is relatively similar in the two sets of originals, it is considerably lower in the translated texts.

In this paper, we describe the compilation of the Slovene Lexical Database; main focus being on developing the methodology to improve the tools used for lexicographic analysis and to introduce automatic data extraction in the lexicographic process. The semi-automated approach, which was devised in the last stages of database compilation, involved extracting corpus data, i.e. grammatical relations, collocations, examples, and grammatical labels, and conducting lexicographic analysis in the dictionary-writing system rather than in the corpus tool. An evaluation that compared the manual approach with the semi-automatic approach showed that the semi-automatic approach is much quicker and presents the lexicographers with almost all the information they identified as relevant during the manual analysis, as well as additional potentially relevant information for the dictionary entry.

A sociolinguistic survey reveals the complexity of language use of daily commuters from Idrijsko to Ljubljana, and the complexity of linguistic choice in different circumstances. It shows the immense linguistic variation between the two poles, the standard language and the dialect, both being mostly linguistic ideals. The survey also shows that linguistic choices are largely unpredictable as different persons use very different variants in the same circumstances. These choices are affected by a number of personal factors, i.e. the diversity of personal socializations, with which they, consciously or subconsciously, adopted attitudes towards different linguistic variants and choices.
