The 660-page monograph brings answers to several key issues in the process of drafting a modern Slovene dictionary in the digital age. The articles are divided into ten segments: i) the dictionary is placed in the sociolinguistic context; ii) the outline of a language-resource-based lexicographic work is presented; iii) the first studies of dictionary users in Slovenia are presented; iv) corpora sources are analyzed from the standpoint of lexicographical usability; v) the modern lexicographical procedures are presented in their comlexity; vi) spoken language, intonation and pronunciation are addressed; vii) solutions regarding specialized lexis are presented; viii) a new approach to stylistic marking is implemented; ix) a new outline of word classes in Slovene is proposed in order to assure consistency in description; x) crowdsourcing in different stages of dictionary making is presented as one of possible approaches in modern lexicography.

The monograph describes the construction and content of the Lexical Database of Slovene as a starting point for an exhaustive corpus-based lexical description of modern written Slovene, with emphasis on word use in the contexts of syntax, meaning, and text. The book brings a detailed description of lexicographic processes based on current European trends in e-lexicography, especially those that have not yet been accepted in the Slovenian lexical and lexicographical theory and practice. Concrete solutions in the lexicographical examination of Slovene, described in detail in the monograph, are the basis for lexicographical description in a dictionary of modern Slovene.

The book systematically introduces research on community interpreting in Slovenia, where this field is still relatively new and unexplored. It includes interpreting in healthcare, law and other segments of public sector in which interpreting is performed between parties with an unbalanced distribution of power. The central role is played by a demonstration of interpreting interaction, in which an analysis of the use of linguistic means reveals the very balance of power between different parties in various environments. Special emphasis is put on interpreting official interviews, as a special case of communicative act, which includes features of diadic and triadic mutual exchange and takes place within an institutionalized environment.

A sociolinguistic survey reveals the complexity of language use of daily commuters from Idrijsko to Ljubljana, and the complexity of linguistic choice in different circumstances. It shows the immense linguistic variation between the two poles, the standard language and the dialect, both being mostly linguistic ideals. The survey also shows that linguistic choices are largely unpredictable as different persons use very different variants in the same circumstances. These choices are affected by a number of personal factors, i.e. the diversity of personal socializations, with which they, consciously or subconsciously, adopted attitudes towards different linguistic variants and choices.

The monograph in Serbian language gives an insight into lexicography and lexicographic descriptions in terms of critical linguistics, especially critical discourse analysis and queer linguistics, which makes it part of the discussion within the framework of critical lexicography. It presents studies about placing dictionaries into the society and their understanding in different cultural contexts, both from the aspect of lay audience, as well as lexicographers and linguists. Furthermore, it provides an analysis of dictionary descriptions based on which it reveals their ideological nature. Lexical descriptions are, in fact, an interpretation of the discourse reality seen through the eyes of lexicographers, they are the pursuit of an unstable, and constantly changing meaning in discourse, and thus always a lexicographical approximation – and at the same time, also an interpretation, so it is logical that lexicographical work is far from anything objective.

In this paper we present a language-independent, fully modular and automatic approach to bootstrap a wordnet for a new language by recycling different types of already existing language resources, such as machine-readable dictionaries, parallel corpora, and Wikipedia. The approach, which we apply here to Slovene, takes into account monosemous and polysemous words, general and specialised vocabulary as well as simple and multi-word lexemes. The extracted words are then assigned one or several synset ids, based on a classifier that relies on several features including distributional similarity. Finally, we identify and remove highly dubious (literal, synset) pairs, based on simple distributional information extracted from a large corpus in an unsupervised way.

In recent years, building reference speech corpora was an important part of the activities which provided the necessary linguistic infrastructure in many European countries, for languages with many speakers (e.g., French, German, Spanish, Italian) as well as for those with smaller numbers of speakers (e.g., Swedish, Dutch, Czech, Slovak). This paper describes the process of the creation of a reference speech corpus and its distribution to potential users, as it was done in the case of the Slovene corpus GOS. The corpus structure and fieldwork experiences with recording, labelling system, and two levels of transcription (pronunciationbased and standardized) are described, as well as the main characteristics of the corpus interface (web concordancer) and the availability of the original corpus files.

The results of research and development in the field of automatic term recognition in a mono- and bilingual context are presented. After a review of state-of-the-art the paper describes the main algorithms for the identification of terminologically relevant single and multiword units in texts and presents the author's own implementation of these methods for the English-Slovene language pair. The main part of the paper describes an innovative method of term alignment between languages.

The purpose of the study is twofold: firstly, it analyses the most frequent problems in the translation of legal texts encountered by the university-level students of translation and, secondly, it describes the solutions applied. A fundamental difficulty in the translation of legal texts concerns the highly technical subject matter itself. There are important differences between legal systems, each of which has specific norms, as is reflected especially at the lexical level, in the terminology used. Different text genres (for example, legislation, contracts, indictments, legal textbooks, etc.) require different translation approaches and strategies. For students of translation, a particular problem may also be the high level of abstractness of legislative texts, which are among the most complex legal texts. The paper also discusses difficulties which students have with homonyms, synonyms and collocations in the translation of legal texts.

This paper addresses the issue of translation of rhetorical conventions in academic discourse from the perspective of translator training. The study uses translation task analysis, questionnaires and interviews to examine trainee translators' translation performance, their awareness and perception of academic rhetorical conventions, as well as their assumptions and experiences relating to the translation of academic discourse. The findings identify several pedagogical challenges that need to be addressed in translator training, including trainee translators' familiarity with the social and discursive practices of the academic community, and their awareness of rhetorical elements used in academic texts in a different languages.
