The research of the poetry of Anna Andreevna Akhmatova, provided in this monography, is based on the historical sources (biographical, memoir, author's original manuscripts). Biographical framework is merely a means to elaborately capture the poetic opus. In addition to illuminating some of the lesser-known sides of the life of Anna A. Akhmatova (for example, the so called Tashkent period), it is particularly meaningful the author's suggestive analysis of the poetic work (in particular the renowned A Poem without Hero), which also approaches such painful and decisive moments of the poetess' biography as are complex intimate feelings, periods without inspiration and the difficulties, connected with the process of censorship. The latter are in fact crucial for understanding the poetry of Anna A. Akhmatova. Introduction to the poetics of this maybe the greatest Russian poetess is thus genuinely becoming an essential part of revealing the historic mural on the literary and artistic intelligence of the Russian culture in the first half of the 20th century.

The monograph addresses WWII as a series of military engagements, which merged into a more monolith conflicts in 1941. Nevertheless, this conflict was never a completely solitary one: not all allied forces were at all times in conflict with all axis forces. This is especially evident in the case of the war in the Far East, which was the first to start and the last to end: China was first backed by Germany in its conflict with Japan, only to be backed by the USA later, while the Soviet Union only briefly supported China in their struggle in the middle of the war – and again right at the very end.

The monograph addresses the attitude towards the art of music in Slovenia during the bourgeois period. The national spiritual secession came later in the reproductive societies than in politics or literature. Since patriot Slovenes established their own societies, which cultivated primarily vocal music, the old societies came to be seen as German, despite the fact that they had not been such until the late 1900’s. Despite the “spiritual secession” music was still a connecting force; this quality of music is addressed in the case of Gustav Mahler’s opus and his contatcs.

After the occupation authorities had been established in Maribor the composer and communist Leon Novak from Maribor became one of the organisers of the Partisan resistance. In the autumn of 1941 Gestapo arrested him and he was shot after being severely tortured. In the Party documents his role was labelled as treacherous, which is why Novak was completely overlooked by the post-war historiography. In her contribution the author focuses especially on Novak’s activities in the Association of Young Intellectuals (1935-1936), his role in the organisation of the large textile strike in Maribor (1936), his political activities related to the National Assembly elections (1938), and his underground activities in the months following the occupation of Maribor until his death.
