In collaboration with University of Linkpoing in Sweden we have synthesized TiO2 microbeads with very high photocatalytic activity which have been then used as generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cancer cells. TiO2 microbeads encapsulated by cancer cells enhance intracellular ROS level after UV light photo activation and in this way reduce the survival of the cancer cells by at least six times more in comparison with TiO2 commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. COBISS.SI-ID: 11138132In collaboration with the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham, UK, we have shown that the adherence of oral streptococci can be modified by titanium anodization and nanotube diameter. TiO2 nanotubular surfaces could be used as cover of teeth implants with the function of antibacterial protection.

F. Pernuš and B. Likar, members of the research programme group, co¬founded the high-tech company Sensum in 2000. They, together with the Sensum employees, further developed Sensum into a global niche company in the field of automatic visual inspection of pharmaceutical tablets and capsules. In 2015 the number of employees increased from 50 to 70 and the company began to commercialize new products. From the currently 70 employees, 10 have a PhD degree while additional 4 employees are pursuing a PhD. Sensum, with which several other members of the group are tightly connected, is developing, producing and marketing high¬tech visual inspection systems for the global pharmaceutical market. Customers of Sensum are the leading pharmaceutical multinationals, like Pfizer, Novartis, Roche, Bayer, Eli Lilly, Teva, Boehringer, etc. In 2015 several big pharma companies became customers of Sensum. Unfortunately, the slovenian research agency ARRS does not value these in practice!
