Three members of the programme research group, F. Pernuš, B. Likar and R. Bernard, co-founded the company Sensum in 2000. They, together with the employees, developed Sensum into a global nische company in the field of automatic visual inspection of pharmaceutical tablets and capsules. In the reporting period 2015-2017 the number of employees increased from 50 to 70, and Sensum became a middle sized company. From the currently 70 employees, 10 have a PhD degree while additional employees are currently pursuing a PhD. Sensum, with which several other members of the group are tightly connected, is developing, producing and marketing high-tech visual inspection systems for the global pharmaceutical market. Customers of Sensum are the leading pharmaceutical multinationals, like Pfizer, Novartis, Roche, Bayer, Eli Lilly, Teva, Boehringer, etc. In the reporting period Sensum entered the Japan market.
F.06 Development of a new product
On February 2, 2016, members of the research programme group co-founded the SME INTELITEH, which at the end of 2016 had one employee. Among others, it is planned that the company will commercialize products and services in the field of biomedicine.
F.20 Company spin off
In the reporting period 2015-2017, the researchers on this programme have published 62 papers in peer-reviewed journals! They have published 48 papers, which is more than a half of all papers, in the top 25% of journals in a field according to the IF. The number of citations without self-citations in the last 10 years is 6722. These figures clearly indicate the above the average results of the group. Publications and citation made the researcher, the group, the University of Ljubljana and Slovenia highly recognizable in the scientific fields covered by the programme.
F.02 Acquisition of new scientific knowledge
In the reporting period 2015-2017 the members of the research programme were on the Editorial Board (or International Advisory Board) of the following peer reviewed jurnals and book series: 1. IEEE Tr Medical Imaging (F. Pernuš) 2. EJP Nonlinear Biomedical Physics - Physics of Biological Systems and Their Interactions (A. Stefanovska) 3. Contemporary Physics (A. Stefanovska) 4. Zeitschrift fur Naturforschung. A, A Journal of Physical Sciences (A. Stefanovska) 5. Advances in Planar Lipid Bilayers and Liposomes (A. Iglič) 6. Nonlinear Phenomena in Complex Systems (A. Stefanovska) 7. Image Analysis and Stereology (T. Vrtovec) 8. Journal of Medical Imaging (T. Vrtovec) The invitations to serve on the editorial boards is the recognition of the research of several members of the group.
C.04 Editorial board of an international magazine
In collaboration with University of Linkpoing in Sweden we have synthesized TiO2 microbeads with very high photocatalytic activity which have been then used as generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cancer cells. TiO2 microbeads encapsulated by cancer cells enhance intracellular ROS level after UV light photo activation and in this way reduce the survival of the cancer cells by at least six times more in comparison with commercial TiO2 nanoparticles.
