In collaboration with the company ABB Switzerland, a novel approach to achieve the resource efficiency by minimizing the HRE content (Dy, Tb, which supply is critical) and to minimize the loss of the flux density without degrading the magnet’s resistance to demagnetization was developed. Two different technological approaches were considered for the manufacture of magnets with locally different magnetic properties. The first technology was based combining the raw materials to multicomponent magnets with contemporary sintering technique of spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the second on combining the single component magnets to a fully functional multicomponent magnetic product, with the magnetic properties being preserved in the multicomponent magnet. With this work, we have contributed directly to R/D in ABB with developing an alternative to the homogeneously distributed HREs throughout the magnet with introducing multicomponent magnets containing regions enhanced magnetic properties. We have therefore significantly increased the added value of such magnetic products, as we lowered the cost of the product, and enhanced the local magnetic properties by demand. Based on these successful results we are now entering in the second stage of the technological R/D by applying Spark plasma sintering (SPS) procedures as production means of cost effective rare-earth based permanent magnets for electrical machines [2017-2019].
