One of the properties of PVD hard coatings that has an important influence on their tribological behaviour is the surface topography. This strongly depends on the topography of the bare substrate and the topography induced by the coating-deposition process (ion etching and deposition). In particular, the formation of growth defects significantly alters the surface morphology and the roughness. In this invited lecture, presented at the 13th interntional symposium on sputtering & plasma processes, the relationship between the growth defects and the tribological, corrosion and oxidation properties of PVD hard coatings is explained.

COBISS.SI-ID: 28705831The term surface structuring defines a group of technologies with a purpose to make a micrometer-sized geometric pattern on the material surface. The basic outline of the PhD thesis is a systematic analysis of influence parameters on one side and geometric pattern elements on the other. We tested three methods of structuring: diamond tip scratching, micromilling and laser treatment. In contrast to classical evaluation of influence parameters, the analysis of variance was applied the whole set of results, where a model was set for each measured property separately. The results of this PhD thesis have a broad impact on all technologies were similar methods of surface structuring is used. Instead of the trial-and-error principle these correlations are now empirically acquired and statistically evaluated.
