In May 2017, we organized the international "8th Conference on Experimental and Translational Oncology", which we traditionally conveyed under the auspices of the Society of Radiology and Oncology and took place in Portorož from 19 to 23 April 2017. This year, the organization of the conference was entrusted to our Department headed by Tamara Lah, but most of the members of the group participated in the organization. The lectures and presentations were attended by numerous domestic and foreign top researchers, including a Nobel Prize winner, doctors and clinical oncologists and surgeons. The conference is also intended for the education of doctoral students and young researchers who are only entering the field of this research and, of course, their international exchanges and networking in the desire to increase internationalization of the field.

COBISS.SI-ID: 289740544The residues of anticancer drugs are emerging pollutants in aquatic environments. The mechanisms of chemotherapeutic action of anticancer drugs are mainly targeted at the prevention of growth and division of tumour cells via interference with the genetic material and cell signalling. However, these drugs may not be selective enough to target only tumourcells; they can also act on other types of dividing cells and tissues of exposed organism, and it has been postulated that they can cause adverse effects in aquatic ecosystems. In experimental models with aquatic organisms from different trophic levels we explored ecotoxicological properties of four highly consumed anticancer drugs (5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cisplatin (CDDP), etoposide (ET) and imatinib mesylate (IM)) with different mechanisms of chemotherapeutic action. The studies described in this revies demonstrated that the residues of certain anticancer drugs are hazardous for aquatic organisms, which should be in the future considered in the relevant legislation targeted towards protection of environment and human health. For anticancer drugs environmental risk assessment should be mandatory and should be based on the data from chronic exposure tests including genotoxicity endpoints. Further studies focused on the occurrence and fate of these drugs in the aquatic environment are needed to explore the significance of these findings for aquatic environment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4309839Antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) are promising biological therapeutics against various cancers. In the subgroup of HER2 positive breast carcinoma (BCa), the patients have been shown to benefit from the treatment by a HER2 monoclonal antibody, transtuzumab conjugated with toxic microtubulin inhibitor mayatansinoid, the ADC, named Kadcyla.. Due to its complex activity an ADC needs to be carefully designed for its optimal performance. The aim of our study was to establish reliable in vitro models to evaluate the characteristics of Kadcyla in order and utilize findings for further improvement of a HER2 targeting therapy of most resistant triple negative BCa patients to to prepare 3D spheroids of mono- and cocultured cell models with HUVEC endothelial cells and in the model of BCa: MCF10A spheroids- In conclusion, different resistance to cytotoxic drugs observed between the treated types of mono- and mixed multicellular spheroids are implying that stromal component of the tumor microenvironment indeed plays crucial role in tumor resistance to ADCs.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4316495Food additives are group of more than 2500 different naturally and synthetically produced substances which may be added to foods. We presented the procedure fort the human health risk assessment: which toxicological data are needed to determine acceptable daily intake (ADI), how is asssessed human expoure and how are these data used to determine the maximum permitted level (MPL. As examples summaries of new risk assessments of benzoic acid, sodium, potassium and calcium benzoate, sorbic acid, potassium and calcium sorbate, titanium dioxide and steviol glycosides were presented.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4788088DISSEMINATION of science SYMPOSIUM In terms of dissemination of science and our work, we supported the group of doctoral students under the leadership of a young researcher in our group MARTINA ŠTAMPAR, to organize and edit the abstract book of a Symposium on the topic of cancer diseases entitled "Cancer", where they were lectured by renowned national and foreign experts. The Symposium was attended by almost 200 students of the Ist., IInd and IIIrd Bologna degrees, and was w concluded with a round table on the treatment of cancer, together with the clinicians from the Oncology.
