Paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research of 12 m deep sedimentary core from Lake Bohinj. Sedimentological research identified 29 homogenite-type deposits related to earthquakes in the last 6600 years. The thickest layer of reworked sediment at 4.4-10m depth was formed by a strong seismic event dated to 6617±94 cal. BP. In the Bronze and especially Iron Age (3500-2500 cal. BP) pollen record indicates extensive forest clearance due to metallurgic activities, agriculture and grazing. Human activities led to increased erosion and sedimentation rate, which increased the lake's sensitivity to recording an earthquake (72 turbidite-type deposits over this period). Several flood layers, discovered in Lake Bohinj core can be compared with flood regimes in wider region (e.g. in N Italy and at Ljubljansko barje).

The paper presents the use of carbon isotopes to determine the sources of soil CO2 developed on bedrocks on contrasting geology in Slovenia. We found that the source of CO2 differs according to the type of bedrock with d13C-CO2 values on carbonate areas being higher than on non-carbonate areas. Isotopes of C were also used in the project to determine the origin of organic matter and the age of boreholes.

The pan-European classification of fen vegetation was proposed and supported by the data for the first time. Formal definitions developed here allow consistent and unequivocal assignment of individual vegetation plots to fen alliances at the continental scale.

Treatment performance, fish production, crop plant biomass production, water consumption, and water use efficiency of a pilot aquaponic system for small-scale land-based cyprinid fish farms were evaluated. The efficiency of cleaning was estimated by detailed taxonomic analysis of algae (including diatoms) and analysis of thir frequency. The knowledge gained by detailed analysis of modern diatoms was used in the project to analyse fossil diatoms.

The article connects human science with natural science. The methods described in the paper were also used in the project for determination of the origin of organic matter in sedimentary cores at Ljubljansko barje area.
