The first two Slovene books, the Catechismus and the Abecedarium written by Primož Trubar in 1550, were printed by Peter Frentz whose printing office was stationed in the town of Schwäbisch Hall in Germany. Furthermore, the paper points out the five new discoveries of works by protestant writers from teh 16th century: the Catechismus in the Glagolitic and Cyrillic script from 1561, the First Part of the New Testament (Ta pervi deil Noviga testamenta) and the Articuli by Primož Trubar from 1557-1558 and 1562 and the master’s thesis of Jurij Dalmatin De catholica et catholicis from 1572. It also discusses at length the new discovery of the second preserved copy of the Cerkovna ordninga from 1564 pointing out its meaning and its differences with regards to the Vatican copy.

The paper has sought to critically describe the potential sources for historical data in the web-based dictionary of contemporary Slovene language, i.e. Jezikovni viri starejše slovenščine, Korpus knjižnih del 16. stoletja, the digitalised Slovene-German dictionary of Maks Pleteršnik (1894–1895), Besedje slovenskega knjižnega jezika 16. stoletja and Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika 16. stoletja.

First volume of the modern historical dictionary of the 16th century standard Slovene is currently in preparation, i.e. the Dictionary of 16th Century Slovene Protestant Writers’ Language (Slovar jezika slovenskih protestantskih piscev 16. stoletja). In lexicographical work the editors face dilemmas addressed by contact linguistics in linguistic studies. Centuries of language contact in a common state, islands of German language, specific phenomena of bilingualism in border regions, cultural influences, the influence of Protestant religious movements of the German-speaking areas and the spread of German prints among our countrymen – these are some of the reasons that the 16th century standard Slovene contains a plethora of words derived from or through German.
