The aim of the paper is to present the economy and the economic characteristics of the communities living in the area where the Karst meets the Adriatic Sea, using the Franciscan cadastre (early 19th century). On the basis of the analysis of nine cadastral municipalities, located in the coastal belt from Trieste to Duino, we can observe how the agricultural and non-agricultural activities of the inhabitants were rather well adapted to the difficult karst terrain and the harsh climate. Among agricultural activities the cultivation and selling of higher quality crops (like wheat and wine "prosek"), along with fishing (including tuna hunting), were of significant importance, while the major non-agricultural activities were trade with these crops (primarily with Trieste), “šavorantstvo” (gathering and transporting stone by sea) and quarrying.

The purpose of this article is to introduce the spatial characteristics of the industrialization process in Istria during the period from 1918 to 1940 and is focused on the economic and historiographical analysis of the three industries – bauxite-mining, coal-mining and cement production – which were some of the major industries in the region (the research area is limited to the Croatian part of the Istrian peninsula). The results of the analysis show that the industries were quite dispersed over the region and used docks rather than the roads for an efficient transport. Trieste appeared as a centre of venture capital and knowledge and as a source of investment, but those industries have grown and developed also independently from Trieste, especially under the influence of the Italian banking capital in the 1920s. A significant shift occurred in the 1930s when the fascist economic policy of the state directed economy had a strong influence on the development of those industries.
