For normal functioning of society it is very important that there is a difference between public and private appearance of an individual. Privacy enables us to relax from time to time and behave differently as it is expected for us regarding our position in the society. Privacy is not about embarrassment when displaying the differences between public and private appearance of a specific individual, but a necessary tool that the public image of an individual can be established at all.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1747022Because ‘Big Data’ is rather new phenomenon in domestic law and economy, the introductory part of the presentation gave the audience some insight into the meaning of this phrase, including current statistical data and discussion on economic predictions focusing on ‘Big Data’ as a new industrial revolution which is driven by data and on predictions that in the scope of this new economic branch that is based on arithmetic and automation, it is expected for ‘Big Data technologies’ to grow for 40% in 2015. As an example of domestic use of Big Data, application Supervisor was presented. Further, short analysis of burning legal questions on Big Data was on the table. However, the central part of the presentation was focused on presentation of different surveillance tools based on Big Data and used in police work (crime mapping, predictive software and predictive policing, total information awareness system etc.), including discussion on cost-benefit analysis of these tools. While costs of data technology can be calculated rather easily and accurately, the calculation or estimation of benefit(s) is rather complicated since it is hard to calculate or measure actual efficiency or success of preventive tools.
