Slovenian experience in preparing national annexes to European standards for the design of masonry structures in general (EN 1996) and design of masonry structures in seismic zones (EN 1998) have been presented.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2073447The deterministic analysis is used for design of earthquake-resistant structures. It provides results such as a design earthquake, force, displacement, strength and stiffness, which can be used by engineers aimed at discussing about the adequacy of a structure. Unfortunately it is very difficult to communicate these terms to other stakeholders in the project in order to convince them regarding the necessary adjustments of a structure. Hence, the earthquake engineering develops towards the use of probabilistic methods which enable the evaluation of the seismic risk by measures that are understandable to broader public. In this paper some performance measures for seismic risk assessment, such as the probability of collapse, expected annual loss and a probability of given loss in a certain period of time, are firstly presented. Follows brief overview of the methodology and a demonstration of the risk assessment by means of an example of masonry building.
