The project leader prof. dr. Juliana Kristl became a member of the editorial board of the journal European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics in 2014. The journal provides a medium for publication of novel and innovative research from the areas of Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutics. It belongs to the group A1 journals, since it is placed on the 30th place among the 256 journals in the field of "Pharmacology & Pharmacy" and has a relatively high impact factor (IF 4.245).

COBISS.SI-ID: 13176839In the scope of the project Špela Zupančič has successfully defended her doctoral thesis under mentorship of prof. Julijana Kristl, PhD (2017) [COBISS.SI-ID 292859648]. Špela Zupančič, PhD is currently employed as an assistant at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Pharmacy. Besides the doctoral thesis 13 master thesis have been finished under supervision of J. Kristl, P. Kocbek and S. Baumgartner in the scope of the project,: Tanja Potrč (2014) [COBISS.SI-ID 3586673], Janja Mirtič (2015) [COBISS.SI-ID 3909745], Urša Nagode (2015) [COBISS.SI-ID 3810417], Kaja Rebec (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4167281], Alja Cestnik (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4247409], Kristina Čerkez (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4118129], Jure Dolenc (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4213105], Dragica Glavič (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4109681], Nina Hercog (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4129905], Jernej Pačnik (2016) [COBISS.SI-ID 4246897], Špela Vičič (2017) [COBISS.SI-ID 4382833], Bojan Dolinšek (2017) [COBISS.SI-ID 4432753], Nastja Novak (2017) [COBISS.SI-ID 4326769]. This indicates the direct transfer of the new knowledge to the young experts, who are well employable in the public (pharmacy, faculty) as well as in the economic sector (pharmaceutical industry).

COBISS.SI-ID: 292859648The excellent work done on a given project is reflected in numerous awards recieved by young researchers and master students. Špela Zupančič, PhD, recieved the national scholarship UNESCO- L´OREAL »For Women in Science« (2017) for her top research achievements originating from the work done for the given project (mentor prof.J.Kristl). Janja Mirtič, a young researcher, received the Dean's Award of the Faculty of Pharmacy for Best Scientific Achievements (2017) and the Best Poster Award at the 7th BBBB Conference (2017) on the topic of microencapsulation of probiotics into microcapsules (mentor prof. J. Kristl) [COBISS. SI-ID 4410225]. Nastja Novak with her master's thesis on the topic of isolation and characterization of bacteria with the antimicrobial effect of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans received the Prešeren Award of the Faculty of Pharmacy (mentors Prof. P. Kocbek and A. Lapanje, PhD) [COBISS.SI-ID 4450929] and Urša Nagode recieved Krka prize for the master's thesis on the electrospinning of nanofibers (mentor prof. P. Kocbek) [COBISS.SI-ID 3965297].

COBISS.SI-ID: 4450929Since currently available release methods do not mimic the in vivo conditions in the periodontal pocket, we have developed a completely new flow-through in vitro apparatus, which requires an extremely small volume (a few μL) and a low flow-rate of the medium (9.2 µL/h per cm2), which are key features of the conditions found in periodontal pockets. The tested delivery system can be enclosed in a thin cell of known surface, and release medium flows through it. The cell can be thermostated to body temperature (37ºC) and the medium used for release can be modified to be chemically and physically similar to gingival crevice fluid, which is present in the periodontal pocket.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4479089Tomaž Rijavec, PhD, had an invited lecture Biofilms as a source of probiotics at the Eurobiofilms 2017 Fifth European Congress on Microbial Biofilms, where he introduced our entire innovative concept, which includes both the isolation of new potential probiotics from oral biofilm and the incorporation of the most promising strain in nanofibers. In addition to the latter, within the project we also conducted 3 invited lectures on international [COBISS.SI-ID: 4407409, 3752561 and 4023409] and 3 at home conferences [COBISS.SI-ID: 4106609, 4106865]. Our work was additionally presented at 24 conferences [COBISS.SI-ID 4410225, 4355697, 4307313, 4410225, 4412017, 4405361, 4340593, 4422001, 4055409, 4055665, 4179569, 4188273, 4057201, 4341105, 4137073, 3925873, 3989873, 3898993, 3719537, 3724145, 3718257, 3631985, 3725681 in 3725937].
