The scientific monograph Teorija pripovedi/Narrative Theory by Alojzija Zupan Sosič is a basic work in the field of literary science, since it brings together the survey of the main concepts, which are in use in the analysis and narrative interpretation, as well as the depiction of methodological trends within which these concepts were developed. The work is conceived as a synthesis of the study of classical and postclassical narratology over many years, where the key and most recent findings of foreign theoreticians are taken into account; their presence in Slovenian literary science is tested in many examples. The author analyzes the selected examples with her own critical stance, which is linked with the question of applicative value and usefulness of certain categories. Individual chapters are to this end complemented by various examples of analyses of fiction extracts. The book is welcome, since it brings together new fields in a pioneering way, those that represent the basis of our research programme Intercultural literary studies.

The scientific monograph Reisen ist Rast in der Unruhe der Welt. Fremdhermeneutische Einblicke in die Tagebücher von Stefan Zweig by Matjaža Birka on the basis of literary- scientific hermeneutic concepts of the foreign sheds light on the literary inscenation of the foreign, the Other and one's own in the preserved travelogues of the Austrian-Jewish writer Stefan Zweig during 1912-1940. The themes of the monograph rely on the field of intercultural literary science and importantly contributes to the knowledge and development of the travel-diary writing genre and the literarization of intercultural communication and literary constructions of ethnic, national, religious, cultural, professional, psychological and gender identities of an individual and social groups in Austrian literature from the period of the Modern and between the two wars. The monograph through synchronic and diachronic analytical-comparative method shows the decisive role of literature in facing the challenges of a historically-conditioned identity reconstruction, which is due to migrant processes today even more topical than ever before.

The article deals with the discursive analysis of Disney's Little Mermaid, Pocahontas and Aladdin which it discusses through the combined lens of feminist literary theory and postcolonial studies. It argues that Disney's adaptations of the canonized literary works for children rest not only on the perpetuation and exacerbation of gendered binaries that proliferate in the original literary texts but also on the introduction of racialized discourse not found in the originals. This leads to a specific transmutation of literary works under consideration.

In his epic poem Pfaff vom Kahlenberg, published 1850, Anastasius Grün uses an idiosyncratic reception of the German comical literature of the Late Medieval Period and a depiction of the historical ritual of enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia to criticize the social situation of the restoration period and to present his politically liberal ideas in a more or less hidden way. The transfer of oppositional ideas into the fictive world of literature and into the historical sphere of ancient traditions grants him a distanced position to the current historical conditions of the time.

This book is the first study about the Slovene writer and translator Vladimir Levstik, which is partly based on new archival material, examines how the rebellious Slovene young man met French language and culture and how he progressively took them for his own. Through a detailed analysis of Levstik's translations from French, the research deals also with the study of the various translation issues faced by all literary translators, especially by those who translate French literature. At the end, the author analyses the influence of French writers on Levstik's own prose and shows how the writer evolved from an imitator of Slovenian “Moderna” to a late European realist, who includes social satire in his works.

The book studies translation between different languages in light of their position within the global language system (Heilbron 1999) and presents differences that occur when we translate from hypercentral, central, semi-peripheral and peripheral languages into another peripheral language, namely Slovene. The authors find that the position of the language influences all stages of the translation process, from the translation policy (choosing the text for translation and deciding whether to translate it directly or via a third language) to the financing of the translation and even individual translation strategies on the micro-level. After presenting the global language system, the book explores the dynamics of translation between different language pairs holding different positions within the language system, provides case studies of changing translation strategies in translations from different languages into Slovene, and, in its final chapter, emphasizes the central position a mother tongue has for its native speakers regardless of its position in the global language system, as, for them, it is the basis for all text comprehension and text formation in any language.

This monograph by literary historian Tone Smolej forms part of the research into the cultural contacts between Slovenians and Austrians. It discusses 45 Slovenian writers who studied at the Faculties of Arts, Law or Medicine at Vienna University between the later 19th century and the mid1920s. The first part sheds light on their years of studies in Vienna, drawing on numerous and so far unknown documents from the Vienna University Archives. While giving extensive treatment to their memories of their Vienna professors, Smolej likewise examines the extent to which each writer’s studies influenced his later literary creativity. The book was published in German.

The book is the result of a long research into recent and mostly overlooked literary trends. With the help of the poststructuralist theoretical conceptualisation, especially Baudrillard, the author makes the readers aware of the fact that postmodernist prose, considered the dominant trend in narrative, is coming to an end. In contrast to this deadend of literary production, the author points out a tradition of understanding literature going back to popart, followed by cyberpunk and leading to avantpop literary movement.

The author in the monograph discusses the process of reading literary texts in a foreign language, in German, namely with the Germanistics students in Slovenia. This is a qualitative empirical study, the result of which is a spectrum of various strategies (for a literary reading more or less adequate) of actual empirical readers (cf. http://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/dspace/bitstream/1808/8584/1/SCN% 201_2011_Kos.pdf). The results of this monograph were met with interest in Germany, which ist particularly important since Slovenian experience with Germanistics students in reading texts in the German language was dealt with.

A monograph on diasporic subjectivity and cultural mediation in contemporary postcolonial literatures was published in the USA and edited by Igor Maver with his extensive introductory article. He is also the author of the study that brings new views of contemporary diasporic transnationality and transborder literary creativity within the NorthAmerican continent with a special focus on Canada. The book analyzes the contemporary diasporic literature and discusses the question of cultural identity and subjectivity in Canada and emphasizes the necessity for a reevaluation of Anglophone literary canon with the inclusion of the recent postcolonial diasporic literary discourses; moreover, it points at the need for an interand especially transcultural dialogue in contemporary word.
