The monograph introduces core empirical findings of research in the field of defence studies in the last five years and emphasizes some critical security-related issues. Current security events and processes in the world that are extremely complex and intertwined, stimulate authors' critical deliberation on hybrid war, hybrid peacekeeping, hybrid security and hybridization of conflicts. The transformation of defence policies of contemporary states is introduced in a broader context of national security policy and international security system. The emphasis is given to two approaches: The security sector reform and defence transformation concept, respectively. The monograph also brings about a historical overview of armed conflict prevention efforts, a reflection on European security in the context of Lisbon Treaty implementation and Ukrainian crisis, and warning about the problem and difficulties the European Union faces in the process of implementing Common Security and Defence Policy. The monograph also introduces criteria for the measurement peace operations success, and some other topics in the field of armed forces development, sociology of the military and environmental security.

COBISS.SI-ID: 282201856Edited volume is researching the behaviour of democratic institutions of state regulation, to ascertain their relationship and openness to citizens and their initiatives, and is examining the possibilities of civil society forming policies. Special emphasis is being put on latest (non)democratic processes in both case study countries, i.e. Poland and Slovenia. In practice both countries rank in all aspects among liberal democracies. On the other side, there are different sorts of meagre democracies: exclusive, non-liberal, delegation and patronising. The book presents selected Slovenian and Polish constitutional regulations, as well as the organisation and actions of political authorities. Authors are seeking answers to different questions, for instance the question of the extent to which both countries have managed to approach the ideal model of democratic regulation since democratisation processes in 1990s.

COBISS.SI-ID: 288314880European Union security efforts are strengthening and accordingly the analysis checks the level of their support among the European public. The analysis focusses on two issues: The formation of the EU's common security and defence policy, and the development of a mechanism to provide and coordination of aid in of disasters. The analysis is guided by data obtained by the Eurobarometer and Slovenian Public Opinion surveys. The descriptive use of the data offers an insight into the basic standpoints, opinions and beliefs of the European and particularly the Slovenian public about the EU's security efforts. The results display high public support for those efforts, but at the same time reveal the public is not well informed about security issues. They also show some controversies. According to the public, the decision-making process on security issues should take place in EU institutions whereas the latter insist on a common security and defence policy as an inter-governmental process. Further, the public gives relatively strong support for traditional military missions (defence of the EU territory and provision of peace in the EU) whereas in practice the EU performs crisis management, humanitarian and peace operations outside its territory. On the other hand, a "future European Army" that could perform traditional military tasks lacks sufficient public support. Finally, the public is relatively poorly informed about the EU's civil protection mechanism yet at the same time gives high support for its activities.
