There is a lack of information on the extent of homelessness, which hinders policy making in this area. Despite some progress made by 2011 Censuses that in some countries included also homeless population, the research indicates that there is still a significant lack of comparable data in this field. The book Extent and Profile of Homelessness in European Union, published by researchers included in the European Observatory on Homelessness, tries to address this issue. It brings an overview of the extent of homelessness in 15 European member states, and discusses recent trends and socio-demographic characteristics of homeless people in the selected countries. It focuses also on the challenges of variations in methodology and of arriving at common definition of homelessness and addresses gender differences in experience of homelessness, the worrying trend in rising youth homelessness and the problem of long-term homeless with complex support need, present in majority of the observed countries.
