COBISS.SI-ID: 21962214The paper studies the evolution of bargaining power of employees and management (owners) before and during the recent economic crisis in seventeen European countries using Svejnar (1986) model as a theoretical background. The application of a nonlinear structural equations model to a broad firm-level dataset (Amadeus) reveals that in most countries under investigation the bargaining power of employees rose in the crisis period irrespective of the institutional structure and irrespective of whether the countries have introduced important institutional changes before or during the economic crisis, indicating workers’ increasing share in the division of the value added. But in Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska) workers’ bargaining power decreased (statistically insignificant). In these countries the division followed the value added pattern. The decreased bargaining power is a relevant result, especially also for Slovenia. Namely, these results stress that the division and the firm-level adjustments to the changes in value added do not depend necessarily mostly on national labour market or institutional characteristics, but also firm-level bargaining.
