Use of marginal geomaterials, industrial by-products and recycled wastes in engineering embankments has been an important aspect in the strategy of sustainable construction in recent years in Europe. These materials exhibit a wide variety of characteristics and behaviour due to the specific mineralogical composition and structure or the diversity of industrial processes that produce them. The existing codes of practice for earthworks are mostly prepared for conventional geological materials, soils and rocks. Conventional tests which have been in regular use in geotechnics for decades are not able to recognize some specific properties of marginal materials and industrial by products such as durability, strength and volume stability due to the delayed chemical reactions, leachability etc. Methods, developed in Slovenia within the past 15 years introduced measurements of suction and swelling-shrinkage behaviour as part of preliminary investigation of compaction behaviour of marginal geomaterials for fills. Test embankments with lysimeters were constructed using different by-products for long term monitoring of structural and environmental performance.
