Aerosol variability over the southwest region of Slovenia was investigated using an ultraviolet scanning elastic backscatter LiDAR with vertical scanning. The average value of aerosol extinction with the presence of land-based air masses from the European continent was found to be two-times larger than that influenced by marine aerosols from the Mediterranean or Adriatic Sea.

Radon emanation from mineral grains to soil gas depends on lithological characteristics of mineral grain composition, porosity and soil moisture. All these parameters influence the transition of radon atoms from mineral grains to soil gas and subsequently on radon transport from soil gas to the atmosphere. The study gives an important base for the study of atmospheric stability and air mass movement on the basis of radon concentration in the atmosphere.

The Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory in operation since 2008. The objectives of the Observatory are to probe the origin and characteristics of cosmic rays above 0.1 EeV and to study their interactions in the atmosphere through the detection of extensive air showers. The Auger design features an array of 1660 water Cherenkov particle detector stations (SD), which detect particles reaching the ground, and 24 remote sensing fluorescence telescopes (FD). This paper describes the design and performance of the detectors, related subsystems and infrastructure that make up the Observatory, including remote sensing lidar devices. Lidars are responsible for monitoring of atmospheric properties and are crucial for successful operation of the FD detectors.

We present the first hybrid measurement of the average muon number in air showers at ultrahigh energies, initiated by cosmic rays with zenith angles between 62° and 80°. The measurement is based on 174 hybrid events recorded simultaneously with the surface detector (SD) array and the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Due to the inclusion of Xmax observable obtained by FD remote sensing, the measurement provides an important insight into mass composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays at Earth.

The frequency of the superfireballs was studied on the ground of historical observation data collected from newspapers in period 1850 – 2000 through a citizen science project. The results confirmed some of the already known fireball streams, while some of the statistically significant peaks in fireball activity are new and have not been confirmed before.
