The book is a monography on the karstic cave Velika Pasica near village Gornji Ig. It is 125 m long and it is recognised as the 791th longest cave in Slovenia. Based on the specimens collected from the cave, 12 new terrestrial and aquatic species new for science were described there. At the beginning the cave was well known location for rare cave-dwelling beetles and snails and later were added other groups, too.In 2000 was discovered a rich community of aquatic organisms, not expected in such type of the cave. Later it appered that it is location of four species new for science. In total, 31 obligate cave-dwelling species were recorded from the cave: 22 aquatic and 9 terrestrial. This put the cave on 9th and 7th position among the world's most rich caves with cave-dwelling species. The book is one of few evene on the global scale which presents the cave from different aspects.

COBISS.SI-ID: 281110784The emergence and circulation of West Nile virus (WNV) was in at least one of the last six seasons confirmed in all the countries bordering Slovenia. In Slovenia we have so far confirmed only one case of acute infection with WNV in humans (August 2013). Epidemiological, epizootološki and entomological data from neighboring countries suggest the possibility that WNV has previously appeared in Slovenia, but we have not detected, or that there is a substantial likelihood of a wider spread of WNV in the country. Slovenian territory is classified as predisposed area of the emergence of WNV, because there are natural conditions in the environment that enable the existence of the vector Culex pipiens. The presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes and in domestic animals has not been proved, but it was confirmed in wild birds. By combining the knowledge of experts and the involvement of decision-makers from different sectors it was prepared preparedness plan to the emergence of West Nile virus and measures to limit potential outbreak.

COBISS.SI-ID: 280329728In the time of global biodiversity crisis and climate change, natural history collections (NHC) are gaining recognition of an essential tool for mining the past to manage the future. While the leading scientific journals (incl. Science and Nature) broadcast repeated appeals for improving standards of NHC, cutting funds, neglect of all sorts, and decay remain to be the prevailing practice. In Slovenia the NHC are recognized as a research infrastructure only half-heartedly, at the best, and the nation has anything like representative archive of nature. Mistakes are irrevocable.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1462261At the 3rd International Symposium »Vibrational Communication in Arthropods« in Frankfurt Prof. dr. Andrej Čokl and Dr. Meta Virant-Doberlet received the Insect Drummer Lifetime Achievement Award. It was awarded to them as a recognition of their interdisciplinary work on vibrational communication in stink bugs and leafhoppers. Complex studies applying biophysical, behavioural, ecophysiological, neurobiological and molecular approaches placed the Department of Entomology at NIB among the world-wide leading groups working on arthropod vibrational communication.
