COBISS.SI-ID: 1537687236The innovative capability of an organisation depends on the intellectual capital that it possesses. Our research attempts to examine the influence individual intellectual capital components have on the innovativeness and consequent growth of a company. This paper proposes a classification and measurement method of intellectual capital, highlighting the following three components; human capital, organisational capital, and social capital. COBISS.SI-ID: 1537483972Tourism is rightly placed among the industries, where strong competition in the market is present. Therefore, in entering the market and in making theirs offer the tourism companies are forced to act creatively and innovatively. Only through innovative approaches they may acquire or at least maintain their competitive position. Even tourists, who are consumers in the tourist market, are becoming increasingly conscious, educated, resourceful and flexible. Aiming to meet the demands of modern tourists, the tourism businesses have to create innovative tourism products. Although the need for new knowledge in the field of innovation is large, the research in this area is limited and insufficient. The past research in the field of entrepreneurial qualities was mostly restricted to the processes of setting up a business and analyzed the factors that influence the effectiveness of these processes. Recently, entrepreneurship researches focus more to other areas, particularly on the basis of innovation. It is usually stressed that only innovative companies are competitive and successful. Entrepreneurial characteristics are among the key factors that affect innovation in enterprises. Researchers have studied this effect largely, but only few of the studies are dealing with these factors in a tourism industry. The purpose of this paper is to present the preliminary results of extensive research on innovation in tourism businesses. First, the theoretical background in the field of entrepreneurial skills and innovation is discussed; additionally the results of the analysis are presented.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1537498564Many researchers have emphasized the importance of the entrepreneur’s characteristics, networking, technological development and environment for innovations, more recently especially the importance of innovation for growth, and the performance of businesses, national economy, regions and the entire global economy has been studied. Studies that examined the factors and effects of innovation have been largely restricted to manufacturing. No previous study (we found neither foreign nor domestic research on this topic), especially in the tourism industry, has succeeded in proposing and even less in testing an integrative model that links the impact of the characteristics of the entrepreneur, networking, technological development and environment to innovation as the key factor of SMEs' performance.
