The monograph is a comprehensive study of karst landscape, surface and underground. Microbial biofilm which is developed around lamps in tourist caves with electric lighting represent a significant problem because it deteriorates the stony substrata.

COBISS.SI-ID: 269512704The external surfaces of structures belonging to the cultural heritage can be protected from detrimental weather and other environmental effects by means of transparent functional coatings, which work on the principle of photocatalysis or superhydrophobicity. However, at the same time it is necessary to retain the authenticity of these historical materials, as well as providing as durable protection as possible. In this diploma work an investigation has been performed into the contributions of various commercially available transparent coatings on the effectiveness of protection in the case of materials which are typically found in structures belonging to the cultural heritage. According to their function, transparent coatings need to be hydrophobic or photocatalytic, or else need to have a particular strengthening effect. The characteristics of these coatings were investigated using the following test methods: visual assessments, colorimetry, measurements of the contact angle, determination of photocatalytic activity, and durability. The results of these tests showed that the effectiveness and durability of the photocatalytic or hydrophobic action of the coatings depended on the investigated type of substratum, so that it is necessary to determine the optimal type of coating for each cultural heritage material separately.

COBISS.SI-ID: 36992773By using microdestructuve characterization method DRMS the efficiency and depth of hardening of wide range of historical materials can be reliably determined. The method also allows profile analysis of the strength of materials. The operating principle of this method is measurement of force caused by diamond drill in the investigated material at a constant speed. By measuring the value of the drilling forces as a function of depth alteration of the strength of material can be reliably monitored. With this we can determine the homogeneity of the material, the degree of degradation at different depths and efficiency of consolidating procedure. DRMS is a portable device that allows measurements both in the laboratory and in the field. By choosing test parameters such as rotation speed, the speed of penetration of the drill and drill bit diameter, the measurement may be adjusted for different solid materials.
