A MSc thesis in Geophysics at the University of Ljubljana was written in the frame of the project. Thesis advisor and co-advisor are both members of the project team.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1217886We created a first cross-border map showing the thickness of Holocene marine sediment in the Gulf of Trieste (shared by Italy and Slovenia), for which we integrated archival data of project partners OGS institute and Harpha Sea company, and the new data acquired in the frame of the project. The map represents a foundation for studying the complex interplay of sedimentary, erosional, tectonic and paleoclimatic processes which shaped the present-day extent and geometry of Holocene deposits in the Gulf. The map will also serve in planning human activities affecting the seabottom, such as infrastructural projects and utilization of mineral deposits, and in assessing their impact on the environment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1232222In the frame of the project we performed reflection seismic profiling campaign SLOMARTEC 2013 in Slovenian offshore area, which we consider a nationally significant scientific and socio-economic achievement. In collaboration with the foreign project partner OGS 130 km of 2-D multichannel reflection seismics were shot, with quality matching the oil-industry standards. Acquired data is of prime importance for various geological and multidisciplinary investigations of the offshore area, as well as for commercial enterprises such as search for oil and gas and thermal water. This are the first available seismic sections in the Slovenian coastal area. For our project, the acquired seismic sections will contribute important input for valuating recent activity and earthquake hazard of faults in the offshore. We also expect that this new data will stimulate further scientific and commercial research.
F.02 Acquisition of new scientific knowledge
The presentation summarized state-of-the-art understanding of active tectonic processes at the Alps-Dinarides transition, emphasizing the comparison of short-term geodetic and long-term geologic observations and pointing out the current controversies. The talk included research results of the current project from the Gulf of Trieste, which was presented as an example area where Quaternary-active faults were determined, but where no Recent seismic or geodetic evidence of activity was found. This was a solicited talk presented by the Principal Investigator at the 20th Congress of the Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association, 24-26 September 2014, Tirana, Albania.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1194846We developed a workflow for systematic data acquisition and 3D interpretation and modeling of high-resolution subbottom acoustic sonar profiles. We determined optimal geometry of the profile network and fine-tuned the survey acquisition parameters. Using freely available software, we defined the workflow for raw data filtering, noise removal and signal improvement, and conversion to industry-standard data formats. Geological interpretation and 3D modeling of subbottom structure is performed with the open-source seismic interpretation package OpendTect. Viability of our method was demonstrated at the Strunjan bay test site, where we reconstructed subbottom spatial geometry of pre-Holocene river channels and associated levees and crevasse splays, which are covered by Holocene marine mud.
