The aim of the lecture was to present stereotyping as an important discourse strategy and culture-specific linguistic phenomena in tourism advertising discourse. Stereotyping in tourism advertising occurs when the authors of advertisments generalise underlining only those qualities that make a competitive advantage of the advertisied product. Therefore, nature as the most important quality in Slovenia play the key role in constituting the identity of tourism product.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1539077828In the lecture the importance of language technologies for forming tourism terminology on the basis of Slovenian-English online dictionary of tourism terminology TURS and multilingual corpus of tourism texts TURK is presented. Due to the fact that both, dictionary and corpus, rely on the authentic tourism texts, they retain an important role in analysing and shaping the local, regional, and national identity and culture.

This characteristic was used in a clever way in 1996, when the illustrator Tomaž Lavrič created a hen wearing the Slovene national costume for the website named Mat’Kurja, which was one of the most visited Slovene websites at that time. Animals from the semantic field of poultry are commonly used as symbols, e.g. as state symbols (e.g. the Gallic rooster), as mascots of sports clubs (e.g. the fighting cock of the English football club Tottenham), or businesses (e.g. Podravka’s cock on the cover of soup packets). However, the Slovenes are reluctant to identify with the hen shape of their country, and it has not been developed into a recognizable symbol of Slovene tourism.

COBISS.SI-ID: 20730120The article presents an analysis of the corpus of tourism texts TURK with special emphasis on phrases containing the words odličen, odličnost, odlikovati and odlika, which are all formations from the same root denoting excellence. Based on their etymological meaning, it is argued that these lexemes are semantic superlatives and thus have an intensifying function. Through the study of the collocates of these words and the syntactic functions of the phrases in which they appear, it can thus be concluded which traits of excellence are considered as particularly important in Slovene tourism and of basic importance for the conservation of the Slovenian natural and cultural heritage.
