Reinke's edema (RE) is a relatively common and benign mucosal lesion of the vocal cords causing low-pitched voice and hoarseness. Very rarely it undergoes a malignant change. The aim of the study was to establish the level of thyroid (thyroid stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine, thyroxine) and sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol, progesterone) in the serum of male RE-patients and compare them to the values of hormone levels in males without lesions of the vocal cords, males with CL and males with vocal cord polyps. The study involved 154 male patients with vocal fold lesions (56 RE-patients, 49 patients with vocal cord polyps, 49 patients with CL, who underwent surgery. The control group consisted of 48 randomly selected males without voice problems or abnormalities of the vocal cords. A statistically significant difference was found in the level of the fT3 and sex hormones (P and T) among male RE-patients and male patients without abnormalities of the vocal cords, male patients with CL, and male patients with vocal cord polyps. The level of the hormones in RE-patients was significantly higher compared to each of the compared groups.
