In this paper we describe five independent assays to estimate the sequence complexity of SELEX pools. Properties and features of each method are discussed and compared.

The paper reviews the mass spectrometry-based approaches for determining the proteolytic events in complex biological samples. The methodologies for substrate identification and the determination of protease specificity are discussed, with a special focus on terminomic strategies, which combine peptide labeling and enrichment.

The aim of this study was to investigate susceptibility patterns, virulence gene profile and clonality among MRSA isolates with positive screened resistance phenotype for CA-MRSA collected from patients in Slovenia In 151 isolates fulfilled our screening phenotypic definition (126 CA-MRSA and 25 HA-MRSA) were analysed in antibiotic resistance, MLST, spa and presence of toxin genes. Our results show high variability of CA-MRSA circulating in Slovenia and also the presence of LA-MRSA clones.

In this study, we characterized the S-layer protein A (SlpA) of animal and human strains belonging to different PCR-ribotypes (PR) and compared the in vitro adherence and in vivo colonization properties of strains showing different SlpA variants. Adhesion assays indicate that C. difficile strains vary in their capacity to adhere to cells in culture and that adhesion seems to be independent of the SlpA variant. Colonization properties were assessed in vivo using a dixenic mouse model of colonization. One of the strains had advantage in colonizing the intestinal mice niche.

Toxinotypes are a heterogenous group of strains that are important in the development of molecular diagnostic tests and vaccines and are a good basis for C. difficile phylogenetic studies. Here we describe an overview of the 34 currently known toxinotypes (I to XXXIV) and some changes in nomenclature.
