The first one-step reverse-transcription droplet digital PCR-based absolute quantification of RNA viruses in different types of surface water samples is reported in this paper. This quantification method proved to be more precise and more tolerant to inhibitory substances than the benchmarking reverse-transcription real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). This new tool is fully amenable for the quantification of RNA viruses in the particularly low concentrations usually found in water samples.

Salicylic acid (SA) mediates the hypersensitive response in plants to minimize the viral spreading. Hypersensitive response is characterized by programmed cell death and reactive oxygen bursts at the site of infection. Transgenic plants that do not accumulate SA exhibited exaggerated disease phenotype due to unrestricted viral spreading. The absence of SA leads to significant changes at the whole transcriptome level, including a delay in activation of expression of genes known to participate in defence responses.

A study published in the journal that is the first in its field (agriculture, multidisciplinary, A" grade), reports high root colonization of grapevine roots with fungal endophytes that was also significantly higher in sustainable vs. conventional vineyards. In addition, differences in composition of endophytic fungi on roots and in soil (spores) was confirmed between bot types of vineyard, confirming that the change in vineyard soil management toward more sustainable practices improves the abundance and diversity of endophytic fungi, thus suggesting their greater ecological importance in environments with significantly reduced inputs.
