The aim of this article is to show how recent Slovene literary scholarship has assessed literary criticism and the practice of the literary essay. The chief finding confirms the assumption that in the past decade and a half there have been many works that significantly expand previous historical and theoretical understandings. If other scholarly events are included, it is possible to conclude that literary scholarship vigorously and competently reflected upon both forms.

A new model for a 21st century reading curriculum (RC), needed as a consequence of the changes made by new technologies on human brains in the last two decades, will be presented. Cognitive science warns that some of these changes can seriously threaten the science learning process in school. This of course has implications for the educational system - including, perhaps primarily, the RC. A RC for the "Homo zappiens" (HZ) generation should comprise of two kinds of reading competences: informative and explicatory reading/learning texts strategies (=off-line reading competence); ICT reading/learning strategies (= on-line reading competence). Both of these are essential for reading, especially for reading both types of natural science texts: those on the screen and those on the paper -in the natural science textbook and in the secondary science literature. The results of the meta-analysis, which was used to examine the basis for implementing a reading curriculum for Homo zappiens by natural science teachers in the near future, are an important part of our research. The question is crucial and relevant because research has proven a strong connection between reading competence, reading comprehension and learning success generally, particularly in a science field. The results have shown a strong absence of interest among natural science teachers regarding reading competence for comprehension of science texts.

Marking 200 years since the birth of Franc Miklošič the FF UM and Municipality of Ljutomer declared Miklošič Year. In this context M. Jesenšek organized an international scientific conference on life and work of the most important linguist of the 19th century. On this opportunity a scientific monograph was published (ed. M. Jesenšek) – discussions are divided in six chapters: (1) The first one presents Miklošič as a man and scientist whose work in linguistics marked the second half of the 19th century (Puconja, Schnabl, Stavbar, Kocutar, Jensterle, Tokarz, Maček); (2) second group comprises (comparative linguistic) discussions with broad Slavic themes (Šekli, Pronk, Babič); (3) common topic of the third group is Miklošič’s non-Slovene linguistics (Labroska, Pandev, Nyomarkay, Grošelj, Karlik, Lipavic Oštir); (4) fourth group presents Miklošič’s work for the Slovene studies (Mikulan, Gerd, Orel, Jesenšek, Šek, Ulčnik, Bajzek); (5) the fifth group is a dialectal (Šivic, Zorko, Koletnik); (6) by the sixth group are presented synchronic researches of the Slovene and Polish language (Stramljič Breznik, Bańczerowski, Warchał). Supplement presents actuality of Miklošič’s linguistic work (Puconja) followed by six article summaries written by authors who did not manage to finalize their articles before the final editing date (Varja Cvetko Orešnik, Mojca Horvat, Janez Marolt, Majda Merše, Marko Snoj and Jožica Škofic).

The definition of a children’s picture book contains a formal description of this specially designed multi-modal book: it has to contain more illustrations than text; in principle, the maximum number of words is 1,800; the topics are selected according to the child’s cognitive abilities in the pre-reading period. According to the interaction between the text and illustration, there are two extremes: the first group of books in which the text and the illustrations represent an independent whole and the second group of picture books where the level of interaction is very high. The analysis of the discussed picture books was primarily based on determining the interaction between the text and the illustration. We were interested in all the elements which may have impact on the interaction: cover, inside cover, endpapers, font, layout of the text and illustrations, quantity of illustrated scenes.

It is interesting to observe similarities between the latest prose text of Florjan Lipuš entitled Inquiry After a Name from 2013 and The Flight of Boštjan published ten years earlier, in 2003, as well as how the two works complement each other and how the latest one originates from all of the earlier ones, while at the same time transcending everything that was written before.
